Bruno Court - A Piece of History

Working with Absolute Project Management, the exciting renovation project included the reconfiguration and redesign of two adjoining two-bedroom flats within ‘Bruno Court’, a Grade II-listed building based in the centre of Hackney, London.

Designed by one of the premier British architects of the 1930’s ‘Burnet, Tait & Lorne’, the Bauhaus-style building was built as an extension to the German hospital wing, and served the high number of German residents in the area. Converted into a modern apartment block in 1996, the building is now home to 19 apartments.

Often regarded as one of East London’s ‘finest modernist buildings’ according to ‘The Modern House’, Bruno Court is thought to have been inspired by Alvar Aalto's Finnish masterpiece, Paimio. Today the building remains a striking piece of architecture due to its bold, simplistic designs and clear lines unseen amongst surrounding buildings.

The Project

Experts in stylish and efficient property renovation projects, Absolute Project Management were a perfect choice to take on the renovation of the two apartments and ensured they not only created a stylish and welcoming living space but also took inspiration from the building’s heritage to complement and enhance the original features.

The project saw the overall layout of the flats dramatically changed with the enlarged two-bedroom flat becoming the client’s main home and a one-bedroom space to be renovated and rented out.

Waxman’s tiles were selected to create a modern yet timeless feel within each of the three bathrooms which were enhanced by luxurious fittings and styling chosen by Absolute Project Management.

The Tiles

The clients were looking for “beautiful well-made tiles in stunning colours, that worked well with the Bauhaus style of the building” - with Winckelmans tiles fulfilling the design brief perfectly.

A solid choice, Wincklemans are fully vitrified, unglazed and through-body making them hard-wearing and long-lasting. Thanks to their near-zero porosity, they also have excellent stain resistance and can be used in even the dampest locations without changing colour of appearance.

Tiling for the project was provided by Bojart Construction Ltd. who provided an excellent job across all three bathrooms.

In Ensuite 1 an assorted mix of 5cm and 10cm Winckelmans tiles in ‘Black’ and ‘Super White’ were used to coat the walls, floor and shower area creating a modern aesthetic.

In the secondary ensuite, the client opted for Winckelmans 10cm tiles in ‘Old pink’ which were used again for the walls, floor and shower area. This included mitred tiles to give the angled walls a seamless look and smooth finish.

WC
In the larger property, Winckelmans 10cm tiles in the colour ‘Parme’ were chosen for the WC which created a modern looking splashback.

It is their hard-wearing nature and versatility that make Winckelmans an ideal choice not only for residential bathrooms as chosen for Bruno Court, but also an ideal solution across larger commercial and industrial projects.

Overall, the client was thrilled with the project with Helen Rayner of Moon Street Studio perfectly capturing the stunning renovation and tiles used in the project.
